Today's quotation:

Life is without meaning.  You bring the meaning to it.  The meaning of life is Whatever you ascribe it to be.  Being alive is the meaning.

Joseph Campbell

Today's Meditation:

The first four words here take most people aback, raising immediate protest.  How can life be without meaning?  Of course life has meaning!  But I believe that Joseph makes sense--the meaning of our lives is what we bring to our lives.

If life itself had meaning apart from us, there would be no room for individual growth, for all would be defined for us already.  But as most of us know from years of finding ourselves going in many different directions-- most of which were unpredictable-- nothing really has been defined for us at all.  We're living through a process of exploration and discovery, learning what our lives are all about on our own terms, in our own time.

You are alive.  What does that mean to you?  Does that mean that you must do certain things, accomplish certain objectives?  Does that mean that you should pursue spiritual awakening or learn how to relax really well?  Does that mean that you should get a job that will give you power and prestige so that you can help many people, or does it mean that you should find a humble job that will allow you to help fewer people, but more deeply?

It really is up to you.  You bring the meaning to your life--there is no one answer or path that's appropriate for everyone.  Be alive, and find the meaning that's best for you!

Questions to consider:

What meanings have you brought to your life so far?

Why does your life have different meanings that someone else's?

How can you explore new meanings, and add them to your life?

For further thought:

Life is.  I am.  Anything might happen.
And I believe I may invest my life with meaning.
The uncertainty is a blessing in disguise.
If I were absolutely certain about all things, I would spend my life in anxious misery, fearful of losing my way.  But since everything and anything are always possible, the miraculous is always nearby and wonders shall never, ever cease.

Robert Fulghum
