Today's quotation:

When you become detached mentally from yourself and concentrate on helping other people with their difficulties, you will be able to cope with your own more effectively.  Somehow, the act of self-giving is a personal power-releasing factor.

Norman Vincent Peale

Today's Meditation:

Norman here is talking about the law of attraction, or whatever you wish to call it.  It's a principle of life that states that we all attract to us exactly what we focus on ourselves.  If we focus continually on our problems-- be they financial, emotional, relationship, or any other kind-- guess what we'll attract to us?  Exactly-- more problems that are attracted to us by our negative focus.

But when we focus on giving of ourselves to others, what kind of attraction will we be setting up?  If we have a positive focus on helping others, will that positive focus attract to itself something positive or negative?  We may not see anything immediately, or even very clearly in some cases, but we can be sure that our focus on the positive is having positive effects on our lives.

Norman talks about detaching mentally from ourselves, which is another way of saying changing our focus from the negative elements of our lives to ways that we can contribute to the positive sides of the world.  Our personal difficulties, it seems, can be dealt with more effectively when we're using our energies to help other people.  Or is it perhaps that as we help others with their difficulties, our own seem to diminish in importance and intensity, leaving us with completely manageable problems where we used to see monsters?  And the extra power that's released when we help others is more than enough to take care of what we need to take care of.

Questions to consider:

Have you ever tried forgetting your own problems for a time to help someone else deal with theirs?  What was the outcome?

Why might it be difficult to detach ourselves mentally from our own problems?

What does Norman mean by "power-releasing factor"?

For further thought:

To receive more, we must give out what we receive. . . . For it is by giving that we set in operation the unfailing law of measure for measure.  With no thought of receiving, it is impossible to avoid receiving, for the abundance you have given is returned to you in fulfillment of the law.
