Today's quotation:

Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams.  Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential.  Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed, but with what is still possible for you to do.

Pope John XXIII

Today's Meditation:

Where do you focus your mind most of the time?  Is it easier for you to focus on your fears or on your wants and desires and hopes-- thinking of them as possibilities all the time?  Most of us tend to focus on what we don't have, and our desire not to lack that something anymore, rather than on where we want to be in life.  Our potential and the possibilities in our lives tend to scare us, for when we pursue our potential, aren't we risking failure?

Believe it or not, we never will reach our full potential until we're able to pursue it without the fear of failure or loss to sabotage our efforts.  It takes a lot of effort and trust to reach a point at which we can go after what is still possible without keeping our minds on failures or setbacks of the past.  But they're in the past, not in our current efforts-- unless we bring them there with our minds.

Our fears are simply feelings caused by negative experiences in the past, and our minds' tendency to hold on to those and worry that they'll happen again, but only worse.  If we're ever going to reach our potential in any area of our lives, then we must trust that life will take care of us as we strive to reach it.  Thinking of our fears and frustrations can lead only to the self-fulfilling prophecy of further unfulfilled potential.

It's not what we've done-- or not done-- in the past that matters.  It's where we focus our thoughts and attention right now that truly matters as we strive to fulfill the amazing potential that we have on this planet.

Questions to consider:

What do you tend to focus on when you undertake a new venture?

Why are our fears so dominant in our minds?  Do they help us?

Just how far does your potential reach?  Have you ever truly considered this question before?

For further thought:

Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news.  The good news is that you don't know how great you can be!  How much you can love!  What you can accomplish!  And what your potential is!
