Today's quotation:

The unthankful heart... discovers no mercies;
but let the thankful heart sweep through the
day and, as the magnet finds the iron, so it will
find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings!

Henry Ward Beecher

Today's Meditation:

It's a fascinating thought, isn't it, that we find in life what we bring to life?  That our days will bring to us exactly what we bring to our days?  Experience tells me that while there are moments in which this principle doesn't seem to be working, the fact is that if I bring gratitude to my life, then I'll constantly find more and more things to be thankful for.

If my heart is grateful, then that feeling of thankfulness will create a filter through which I see the world (or destroy the negative filters we've developed!), allowing me to see more clearly just how many beautiful and wonderful things there are in my life.  The most important thing to realize, though, is that those things are there all the time--I usually just don't see them if my focus doesn't allow me to.  Taking things for granted, envying others, feeling that life has done me wrong--all these approaches to life take away my ability to see clearly exactly what I'm experiencing.

When I'm thankful, my vision is clearer and I see what there is to be thankful for.  When I see that clearly, I attract more of it into my life.  People like being around grateful people much more than they like being around people who see the world darkly.  And the Law of Attraction makes it very clear that we attract to us from the world exactly what we give to the world.  Give anger, and we'll get more to be angry about.  Give gratitude, and we'll give more to be thankful for.

One of my greatest hopes is that I never lose the ability to be thankful, that I never fall into the trap of taking things for granted or thinking about them in strictly negative ways.  If I'm able to maintain my gratitude through all sorts of situations, then I know that life will continue to provide me with reasons for being grateful.

Questions to consider:

Do you "sweep through the day" with a thankful heart?

What kinds of blessings will we find if we go through each day focused on lack or anger or envy or frustration?

Are there really some "heavenly blessings" in every hour of each day?

For further thought:

Can you see the holiness in those things you take for granted--
a paved road or a washing machine?  If you concentrate on finding
what is good in every situation, you will discover that your life
will suddenly be filled with gratitude, a feeling that nurtures the soul.

Rabbi Harold Kushner
