Today's quotation:

Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.

Marcel Proust

Today's Meditation:

No flowers in a garden can thrive unless they are cared for.  Yes, they may bloom and show a bit of color, but as time goes on they'll lose their ability to do so as long as they're not cared for.  Weeds will take over and the soil will lose its nutrients, making growth almost impossible.

We're a lot like flowers in that way.  We do need help; we need encouragement and direction and teaching if we're to reach our potential as happy, loving people.  Yes, we can get by alone, but what do we become without the help of others?  Do we simply survive, or do we thrive?  Do we show all that we're able to show, or do we exhibit the bare minimum?  Without the care that comes from other people in our lives, we wouldn't have grown up to be the people we are, would we have?

So let us be grateful to them.  Let's feel the thankfulness inside for all that they've given us, even the minute amounts that have added up together to become much more than than they were individually.  These people have given us hope and courage and peace and knowledge, and we would be remiss in our duties as human beings to neglect to be grateful for their precious gifts that have helped us so much.

Isn't it time that we recognize the good that the many have given to us, rather than focusing on the bad that the few have done to us?  This attitude may not help those who have given to us, as they may be long gone-- dead or moved away-- but it sure can help us to pass on their gifts to someone else who's in need.

Questions to consider:

Why is it easy to neglect feeling grateful for things that others have done for us?

If you're a flower that's blooming, what kinds of things have contributed to your growth?

What value can gratitude for things that others have done bring to our own lives?

For further thought:

If we make our goal to live a life of compassion and unconditional love, then the world will indeed become a garden where all kinds of flowers can bloom and grow.
