Today's
Meditation:
What is your definition of power? I mean deep in
your spirit, when you're able to focus on life and living
and not think about what the world says about power, just
what does it mean to you? I'm not often able to
think of much of anything in that way because I get so
caught up in the world and my tasks in it, but when I am
able to look past the trappings and the surfaces, I do see
that the only true power is the ability to influence
things and people for the good. The only real power
I show is when I focus on improving things and situations
through my contribution to them.
When I give, I am improving something, either by
fulfilling a need or a dream, or by instilling hope.
I can give of my abilities or my talents or my material
possessions-- it doesn't matter-- and I can influence
someone or something else for the better. And that's
what power is all about. It's not about
"controlling" others or being able to hire or
fire people or being physically stronger than someone
else. It's about making the world a better place, on
no matter how small a scale, and giving is truly the only
way that we can make the world better.
If people see power in destruction or manipulation, then
they're misguided. True power is productive, and
true power is constructive. When we're at our most
powerful, we are willing and able to give of ourselves and
our possessions, with nary a thought of recompense.
When we practice true power in our lives, we are
contributing to the healing of this world, and it's a beautiful contribution to make.
There are lower expressions of power, but if we want to
get on that high road that leads to fulfillment, humility,
satisfaction, awareness, and contentment, then we must
practice the higher forms of everything. When we
express our power, we must find the higher ways of doing
so, and giving, as Vivian reminds us, is the highest
expression of all.
