Today's Quotation:

We all have weaknesses.  But I have figured that others have put up with mine so tolerantly that I would be less than fair not to make a reasonable discount for theirs.

William Allen White

Today's Meditation:

Sometimes it's quite humbling when I start to think of the weaknesses that I have that other people have been extremely patient with.  I've made some big mistakes and have said some things that I wish I could take back, but others don't hold those things against me.  I really do appreciate it when others are tolerant of me and my actions, and I'm thankful that they don't hold my weaknesses against me.

I try to remember this when I see other people make mistakes that I think they probably shouldn't make.  I try to remember that we can best help others by showing tolerance and acceptance-- perhaps not of the actions themselves, but of the person who most likely is doing his or her best to get by in life, but who may be having certain problems in learning lessons as quickly or as thoroughly as other people learn them.

Life is about give and take.  If we give back what we're given in life, we should choose to return the kindnesses and the tolerance and the acceptance, for in doing so we're contributing to the positive side of the world.  We're also being realistic, for what goes around, comes around.  After all, I'm not through making my mistakes, and when more of my weaknesses come shining through, I'm still going to hope for a great deal of tolerance on the part of others.

Questions to ponder:

1.  What are some of your weaknesses that others have been tolerant of?

2.  How have you shown tolerance of the weaknesses of someone else recently?

3.  What kinds of positive effects do we have on others when we show tolerance of their weaknesses and acceptance of them as people?

For further thought:

The capacity for getting along with our neighbor depends to a large extent on the capacity for getting along with ourselves.  The self-respecting individuals will try to be as tolerant of their neighbor's shortcomings as they are of their own.
