Today's
Meditation:
The Tao
Te Ching is a remarkable book, whether it was actually
written by Lao-Tzu or not. One of the common threads
that runs through the work is the idea of letting life
flow as it's supposed to without fighting that flow,
without trying to exert our will onto others or onto life
itself. Yes, there are certain things that we should
resist in life-- mostly people trying to get us to do
things we really shouldn't do-- but for the most part, life
knows much better than we do what it needs, and our
attempts to control it so often lead to frustration or
sorrow.
There's
a certain beauty to letting things flow as they
will. When we recognize and accept that life is
wonderfully equipped to take care of itself, then we can
get down to the business of simply living our lives, doing
the best we can in all we do and trying to help others as
much as possible. If we're not trying to control
life, we can spend our time and effort on things that we
do have influence over, things that we love doing and that
we do well.
As is
said in the Talmud, I believe, "The sun will rise and
set without your assistance." We have a
wonderful gift in the lives that we're leading, but life
really doesn't need us meddling in what it's been doing
forever, and doing very well. It will change things
for us, and our task is then not to fight the changes, but
to move with them and make the very most of them.
(Of course, we need to learn to discern between changes
that life is making and changes that meddlesome people are
trying to make!)
Let's
keep our eyes and hearts open to the changes of
life! Let's be ready for them when they come,
keeping alert to notice the changes as they happen and
move with them. Our world is changing at a very
rapid pace these days, and sometimes it seems overwhelming
to consider all the changes that are happening, but we can
move with them, and we can make the most of them. We
just have to see them for the opportunities that they
present, and do the best with can with all the chances
that come our way.
