Today's quotation:

Even if it's a little thing, do something for those who have need of help, something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.

Albert Schweitzer

Today's Meditation:

It's such a good feeling, that one that you get when you've helped someone else out just for the sake of helping them.  It makes me feel like I've made a little contribution to life, like I've contributed to the well-being and positive energy of the world rather than just taking from it.  I like Albert's use of the world "privilege," for it pretty accurately describes the fact that we're here on this planet in a position where we can help other people who can use our help, and receive a very positive feeling as a result.

Many people feel that others need to "deserve" our help, or that the people who need help have somehow done something wrong to deserve their current situation.  We like to judge others and have them come up short in our judgment, for then we can decline to help in any way because we've somehow judged them unworthy of our help.  But how many people are just one helping hand away from turning things around completely, from improving their lot dramatically?  Unfortunately, if that helping hand never comes then no one will ever see that improvement happen.

Let's help others, for goodness' sake!  It's usually pretty easy to do and doesn't cost us tons of time or effort, and the results can be amazing.  We do have to be careful of people who are taking advantage of our willingness to help and we can't over-commit ourselves, but we can make significant small differences in the lives of many people if we just try.

Helping others is a contribution to life, giving something to the world we live in without condition or expectation of return.  It's up to each of us to decide if we're going to be people who help others or not, and I sincerely hope that you decide to be one-- for the sake of others and for your own sake and benefit as well.

Questions to consider:

What are some small ways that you can help others today?

Why do so many people refuse to help others regularly?

What are some of the benefits that you've experienced when you've helped others?

For further thought:

We can never untangle all the woes in other people's lives.  We can't produce miracles overnight.  But we can bring a cup of cool water to a thirsty soul, or a scoop of laughter to a lonely heart.
