Today's quotation:

Every good that you do, every good that you say, every good thought you think, vibrates on and on and never ceases.  The evil remains only until it is overcome by good, but the good remains forever.

Peace Pilgrim

Today's Meditation:

We're all able to do good things, even if we do so on different levels.  One person's good act may affect thousands of people, while another's may affect two or three.  And that's okay-- a good act is a good act, and when we put more goodness into the world we're contributing to the positive energy of life, to the goodness that affects us all, all the time.  The choice is always ours to add more goodness to the world, and we're all capable of doing so.

Somehow when we're young, many of us learn that goodness is akin to weakness-- that when we do good deeds, we're showing that we're not strong enough.  The truth is, though, that doing good takes more strength, more resilience, more perseverance, than doing bad.  Doing bad is easy-- it takes little thought or consideration, and it usually has immediate results that favor the person doing it.  But it contributes negative energy to the world, and it doesn't help anyone to grow or to develop or to become better than they were.  Doing good, on the other hand, helps people to see and feel in the long term, with patience and foresight that help them to grow into the people they were meant to be.

We often see the world and treat other people in the same ways that we see and treat ourselves.  If I see myself as good, with lots of possibility and potential, then I can look at the world in the same way, and treat the world with kindness and compassion.  We can spread goodness through our deeds and our words, and we can help others to see just how beautiful this world and its inhabitants are, rather than making them feel down and trampled upon and hopeless.

If I can focus my energies on becoming a good person, then I can be a person who spreads goodness in the world-- and the world right now is in desperate need of goodness rather than evil, positive rather than negative.  I want to be one of the people who bring others up, who give them hope and who help them to cope rather than one of those who bring people down and try to keep them down.  At the end of my life I hope to look back and be able to say that I spread goodness rather than evil-- that I helped others rather than hurt them.

Questions to consider:

How do you define goodness?  What does it mean to be a good person?

What are the most important results of good actions?

Why is it so often so easy to neglect to do the good that is available to us to do?

For further thought:

Goodness consists not in the outward things we do, but in the inward thing we are.  To be good is the great thing.
